The body that would not deteriorate

After the great Indian Master, Paramahansa Yogananda (who brought Kriya yoga in the west, and author of ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’) passed in 1952, his body remained in perfect condition even 20 days after.

“The absence of any physical decay in the body offers the most extraordinary case in our experience…No indication of mold was visible on his skin, no visible desiccation (drying up) took place in bodily issues, and no odor of decay emanated from his body. This state of perfect preservation of a body is an unparalleled one. Yogananda’s body was apparently in a phenomenal state of immutability…” – Mr Harry Rowe, Los Angeles Mortuary Director.

He is only one example of consciousness-infused matter. Stories like these are not that uncommon in India, where yogis (through rigorous meditation and practices) transcend the limits of the material world, time and space. What looks like ‘miracles’ to the untrained eye, is merely the realization of our essence, pure consciousness.

This also reminds us that life is a consciousness expanding experience. It’s not survival, paying bills and satisfying our base senses. It is blossoming into what we are meant to become: divinity itself. It is realizing our existence beyond our physical body and thoughts, and nurturing the sacred, innate connection that we have with the whole universe. It is bringing spirit into matter. We are all Alchemists of Life.
